I've noticed something over the years. People love telling you what book they follow... but sometimes it seems like they only read the cover.
When someone says they follow the Bible, I always think, "That's a pretty tall order." It's full of lessons about loving your neighbor, forgiving people, helping those in need, and trying to become a better person. Yet every now and then you run into someone who's carrying a Bible in one hand while arguing with the cashier over a 10-cent coupon in the other.
Makes you wonder if they skipped a few chapters.
Now, I've also heard people talk about the Quran. The truth is, I haven't studied it enough to pretend I'm an expert. Like any major religious text, it's a complex book with many interpretations, and I'd rather admit what I don't know than act like I do. From what I understand, many Muslims see it as teaching compassion, charity, prayer, and living a moral life.
Here's the funny part: no matter what religion someone belongs to—or even if they don't follow one at all—people have an amazing talent for ignoring the parts that require work.
We're all guilty of it.
We like the verses that agree with us.
We skim over the ones that challenge us.
We remember the rules for everyone else.
We conveniently forget the ones meant for ourselves.
If every person actually lived by the best principles of the beliefs they claim to follow, the world would probably be a friendlier place. We'd spend less time arguing online and more time helping the neighbor whose lawn mower just died... or returning the shopping cart instead of leaving it in the middle of the parking lot like it was abandoned by a lost civilization.
Maybe the real competition isn't "Which religion is right?"
Maybe it's "Who's actually practicing what they preach?"
That question applies to everyone.
At the end of the day, I don't think most people are looking for someone who can quote the most verses. They're looking for someone who's kind, honest, dependable, and treats others with respect.
Those qualities are a lot harder to fake than carrying around a book.
Until next time, keep smiling, keep laughing, and maybe spend a little more time living your values than arguing about everyone else's.
